Collets are precision clamping devices used to hold workpieces or cutting tools with high accuracy. The "E" and "R8" types refer to two distinct and widely used systems, each with its own design and application.

ER Collets (E-type)

The "E" in E-type typically refers to the ER collet, which is the most common collet system used worldwide. They are a universal system known for their versatility and precision.

• Design: ER collets have a slotted, flexible body with a clamping range that allows a single collet to hold a variety of shank diameters. When tightened by an ER nut and collet chuck, the collet collapses to grip the tool firmly.

• Key Features:

  • Wide Clamping Range: An ER collet can securely hold any tool shank within a certain range (e.g., an ER32-20 collet can hold from 20mm down to 19mm). This reduces the number of collets needed.

  • High Precision: They provide excellent runout accuracy, which is crucial for precision milling, drilling, and routing.
